There are a myriad of reasons to hate Walmart.
Here is my personal experience ....
I have shopped Walmart for a number of years and spent literally tens of thousands of dollars there. On many occasions
I have purchased items that were either too large or inconvenient to bag, I have also had several occasions where the checker
did not demagnetize an item, usually DVD's.
On one such occasion my husband and I purchased roughly $300 in groceries and sundry items. Not one item in our cart could
be considered as high dollar. We left the 9 gallons of bottled water in the bottom of the cart as always and placed the
remainder of our bags on top. We were approached at the door by the 'greeter' who did not request to see our receipt but
demanded. My husband told her "no" and we kept walking toward our vehicle. The woman followed us out of the store into the
parking lot shouting at us "I have to see your receipt". All of this commotion because we had 9 gallons of 64 cent un-bagged
water amongst hundreds of dollars of bagged items. We turned our cart back into the store and headed to the customer service
counter to return every item which took us hours to accumulate. The same woman followed us in and demanded we stop to have
her 'sticker' the items before we returned them. We refused that as well.
After returning the items we expressed our concern to the store manager who attempted to explain the stores position for
inconveniencing honest customers. He did, however, inform us that the woman was in the wrong to follow us out of the store.
Since then we mostly ignore the 'greeters' whenever they would cackle about requiring our receipt. On one occasion at the
Walmart in Bossier City Louisiana, an elderly woman grabbed my arm as I passed by her after the alarm went off due to my
DVD not being property demagnetized. Another employee grabbed my cart. I pulled away from them threatening to call the police.
I should have done so as I had good grounds for a lawsuit and could have had the woman who grabbed my arm arrested for battery.
I did call the district manager and report the two women by name. The district manager was apologetic and told me that I could
insist that all my items be bagged regardless of size and that the women were definitely in the wrong and would be dealt with.
I have not seen either of them there since.
Now, my latest fiasco while leaving the Walmart in Magnolia, Arkansas. I purchased a larger item which remained on the
bottom rung of my cart. All of my other items totaling close to $200 were properly bagged and demagnetized in the cart. I
could see the potential of a delay at the exit, so I had a bag taped to the larger item so as to be obvious it was rung up.
I verified my receipt as always and placed it in my purse.
On my way through the metal arches, the young female 'greeter' called after me "I need to see your receipt". I turned and
asked her why. She said, "Because you have an item on the bottom
of your cart." I explained to her that I had a bag tapped to the item in order to avoid this situation, but she insisted. I
turned as I suggested she verify my purchase with the checker at register 4 and proceeded to exit. Shannon grabbed my cart
and persisted that I show her my receipt. I told her that I have been through this with the district manager and that she
was in the wrong, both policy wise and legally, to handle my cart. I told her to call the manager and that I would give her
one chance to release my cart before I called the police.
She actually had the audacity to ask me if I would wait there while
she went to get the manager. I said, "No, I am not a thief and I refuse to be treated like one". I pulled away from her
toward the door at which time she grabbed my cart again and pulled it in and away from me. At that point Shannon asked a
woman whom I presume was an off duty employee to keep me there while she went to get the manager.
I was at this time calling 911 and requesting police assistance. The off duty employee declined and went to get the manager herself while Shannon kept
hold of my cart. A minute later another Walmart employee, Cindy, arrived on the scene. Cindy was one of the assistant
managers on duty. Cindy insisted numerous times that I had to show my receipt. All the while Shannon kept hold of my cart.
A rather sizeable crowd was gathering to watch. A couple moments later a male employee, Scott, showed up. I asked Scott if
they were going to press charges for theft. After he told me no, I explained to Scott that Shannon was detaining me
illegally as they have no legal right to keep me from exiting the store if they were not going to file charges. Scott told
Shannon to let go of the cart and quickly expressed to me that I was not being detained and that I was free to go. I
explained to Scott that I had already been detained for over 5 minutes by Shannon keeping my items from me. He reiterated
that I was free to leave. I waited at my truck for the police to arrive and filed a report.
I did go back in the store when returning my cart and asked Cindy and Scott their names as their badges were turned around.
I had already known their names as I had seen Cindy at the customer service desk earlier and had dealt with Scott about an
item on a pleasurable basis a couple weeks earlier. I shop this location quite frequently. They both refused to give me
their names. I went into customer service to get the phone number for the store and district managers. While there I
asked the employee working the counter to verify the names of the two assistant managers, which she did verify it was
Cindy and Scott. As she was giving me their names another employee behind the counter got a call from one of them informing
her to not give their names to me. It was too late!
I have filed an affidavit with the Magnolia Arkansas prosecuting attorney against Shannon and Cindy personally.
